The seedlins are still very small, so we'll see what happens with color as they grow; but there is clear color difference in seedlings. I'm curious to see if purple and rugose can combine on foliage to some degree. About half the seeds have germinated so far.

Those prickles remind me of some open pollinated Rugosa seedlings I have, but the leaves look totally different, delicate and interesting.

The leaves aren't the most interesting part of Rugosas, sort of big and rough, I suppose people like the scent of the flowers and the toughness of the bush.

Yeah, there's no doubt about the parentage with these; the seedling variation should be interesting. Good work!

Thanks! One of the reasons I wanted to grow them out, at least for a bit, was just to see the variation in one batch of seeds. I'll see how vigorous they are and then how much room I can give them. They already need repotted, roots are vigorous anyway. I'm not sure their next pots will be big enough to last until May or June.
Will they recover from stunting their growth in a small pot? Or should I pair them down to fewer and give those ones bigger pots?
I do like the colored stems. Often in winter the colored stems of Therese Bugnet's seedlings were my only color amidst the white.
Although I think I'm going to have to grow large shrubs or climbers to be able to see them here.

Hi Duane!!

I'm excited for you to follow these. Hopefully you can just put them all into larger pots and prune them as needed to keep them all in their space allotted until spring. It would be a shame if they vary for health and other traits and you miss the opportunity to discover those things at this stage due to space limitations in the house.

Very nice! I didn't realize that glauca as a daddy would impart much coloring to its offspring, but I suppose with diploids that makes sense... I wonder if Caninae meiosis will break down in next round, and if selfs might combine rebloom with coloring?
