Re: Chewing On It
Some of you may remember that, some years ago, one of our members used to feed his seeds to his pet doves. Apparently the digestive process did a good job of either softening or removing the seed coating. Then the fun task of collecting them.

Re: Need Advice - I'm Just Starting Out
Welcome to the group of hybridizers - an excellent hobby that can keep you occupied all year. What I would recommend, if you have not already done so, is to get the two booklets from the RHA that you can order. The basic is one we have called the "blue book" for years titled Rose Hybridizing For Beg...

Re: I'm a new member.
Welcome to the Forum - lots of good info available here if we know where you are. It does help if we know as there are so many different climate zones and what types of roses do you grow. Are you in the US or in another country? We do have members in a number of them. Good to see your post Peter - b...

Re: Disease? recognize these spots?
Duane - It looks like the damage from a rose slug. The eat away the top surface of the leaf thus reducing its ability to contribute to the photosynthesis process.

Re: Color Chart
Duane, If you are looking at the same chart that was on the RHA website some years ago, you might be looking at the one developed by Steve McCulloch, Olympia, WA long before it was on the website. Where are you looking at it? I wonder if it is in the archives of the old RHA website. It was first pub...

Re: My First Bloom
Sarah - that first bloom is always special. This one is just lovely, love that soft apricot color. I hope that you are making some crosses right now during the first bloom cycle. All the best to you in your hybridizing.

Re: Looking for Some Varieties
Andre, I have 'The 777 Rose', but it is just starting to show some growth this spring. It has never been the most vigorous grower for me, but if you send me a reminder via PM in late May/early June, I should be able to get a cutting for you. Good luck in finding the other varieties on your list. Joh...

Reading - Inside Plants by Dr. Gary Ritchie. This book is A Gardeners' Guide to Plant Anatomy and Physiology. Dr Ritchie has been a long time contributor to the ARS magazine with his articles on what makes roses and other plants grow. Believe it is available on Amazon.

Harm Saville's roses were originally from NorEast Nursery back east which was sold to Greenheart in CA some years ago. I'm not sure if 'Klima' was picked up by them. Might be worth a check.

Re: Klima
Hi Chuck, Yes, Mitchie did use 'Klima' on a number of her crosses using it mainly as the seed parent as she knew that it was a yellow mini that maintained its color well. It did accept pollen quite well and, as I recall it germinated about average. She was more into the breeding of miniatures at tha...

Peter,
This is one of Saville's that was named for Joe and Marion Klima, great benefactors of the ARS. The Klima center at ARS headquarters is named after them.

Re: Beginner Stratification Questions
Hi Roselynn, Congratulations on some nice looking healthy seeds from your first harvest! They are looking good so far, but as Chuckp said, they can dry in those empty bags. I do my stratification, both warm and cold, in the ziploc snack bags using a moist perlite to keep them from drying out. I do c...

Re: Rose regiostration name explanation?
Another point in favor of using the breeders code plus a suffix of plant info as the registration name is that we often see roses with the same exhibition name. Now if this were the registered name as well, there could be confusion. But the breeders code makes it unique, regardless of the name in wh...

Re: New Breeder 1st Hybrid
Hi Anthony, Congratulations on a beautiful seedling. Most of us had similar experiences when we first started hybridizing when seeds did not germinate as we had hoped. But you stuck with it and see the results. We too have used Scentimental and had some excellent results. Look forward to seeing more...

Re: Beginner Questions
Roselynn, Looks like you are making some interesting crosses. Now the first part of the waiting period begins - watching those hips swell and ripen! As far north as you are, be ever mindful of the time, particularly if you are working outside with plants in the ground. As often written, figure on 90...

Re: So I don't think I'll be using Coir again
Rebekah, We used coir a number of years ago and found it you you a tad on the clumpy side. The next year I put it in the cement mixer with a few rocks to break it all up, which made it work a lot better, but it was still a lot work to get it ready. Never did try the individual seed pod method. Switc...

Re: Total disease resistance
Disease resistance is probably the main goal of most hybridizers! If there was such a "perfect" rose, a lot of incentive for the amateur hybridizers would just fade away, and the rose would be just another flower!

Kudos to Richard Anthony
This is a wonderful offer by Richard. Having roses ready for the trials, be it the RHA trials at Shreveport, the AOE, was discussed many times at the RHA meetings during my tenure as the General Director. These discussions centered around the difficulties most every hybridizer in the northern part o...

Good to hear that you are still doing some hybridizing. It has been a while since I last saw a post from you. Looks like you made some interesting crosses. Now the waiting period until germination! I don't have deer problems, but do have rabbits that love to chew on the lower part of the bush so I t...
