Re: Can you prune Rugosa roses and hybrids?
Yes I will try it and see what happens, as with all roses you never know what they are going to be like until they make their home in a specific micro patch in your garden.

Can you prune Rugosa roses and hybrids?
Can you prune Rugosa roses and hybrids? It looks as though most Rugosas are about 5 to 6 feet high and wide. Can they be pruned to keep them a bit smaller? The ground I planted mine in is quite rough, so the difficult conditions for the roots might keep them smaller anyway. I remember once I planted...

Re: Any luck with OP seeds that overwinter on the bush?
My Blue for You made lots of hips full of viable seeds. I planted some in compost in pots outdoors about January, and they started to germinate. There was a cold spell in February and the germinating seeds died, but seeds that had remained on the bush and I planted later are now germinating. Also in...

Re: rugosa x glauca
Those prickles remind me of some open pollinated Rugosa seedlings I have, but the leaves look totally different, delicate and interesting.
The leaves aren't the most interesting part of Rugosas, sort of big and rough, I suppose people like the scent of the flowers and the toughness of the bush.

Re: How long have roses been on the earth?
Thanks for that information. I was searching online and couldn't find very much, other than China was a big source of roses in ancient times, and that roses only evolved in the Northern Hemisphere. I wondered if that was due to differences in the timing of Ice Ages between the Northern and Southern ...

How long have roses been on the earth?
Roses are 35 million years old?
Flowering plants first appeared 130 million years ago, which is just over one sixtieth of the earth's age.
Modern humans have only been around for 200,000 years, and humanoids for 6 million years.

Re: Size of pot for 12 inch high miniature rose?
From the cold dry continental climate zone, looks like a glazed pot ... not a big fan of them, size looks okay to me for a couple of years if left at least 4 fingers of depth from bottom of root ball and sides (only my way, not Toby Buckland sanctioned :), assume crock(s) in bottom and has drainage...

Re: Size of pot for 12 inch high miniature rose?
South coast of England. The hottest summer day doesn't usually go above 25 degrees Centigrade (77 degrees Fahrenheit), and that bit of patio is very cool and gets shadows for much of the day. We did have an exception for about a week last August when temperatures reached 30 degrees Centigrade (86 de...

Size of pot for 12 inch high miniature rose?
I have a miniature rose which is described as 12 inches tall, Baby Goldstar. It isn't its full height yet as it is a young plant, and I read that it can grow a bit taller than 12 inches, but everywhere it is described as 12 inches high. I have it growing in a pot that is 12.5 inches high, on the ass...

Re: Baby Goldstar seeds.
Today I noticed that two green hips had fallen off the Baby Goldstar rose, and were in the soil in its pot with a bit of stem. I cut them open, and each had one seemingly well-formed quite big seed inside, which I planted. Almost December, and the hips were still green, not turning colour at all. An...

Re: How to distinguish between wild roses?
Yes I collected two hips, and planted their seeds. I didn't want to take too many as they are the birds' winter food, and they look really pretty in winter. Though plenty of hawthorn grow in that area too.

How to distinguish between wild roses?
We were walking on the South Downs in Southern England, and I noticed a lot of ripe hips on wild roses growing in the chalky soil. I have no idea if they were dog rose, sweetbriar, field rose or downy rose, or any of the sub categories of these. The rose bushes and their hips looked dwarfed, smaller...

Re: Baby Goldstar seeds.
Thanks, I will leave the other hips a few more weeks. It does look as though Baby Goldstar hips never turn red and will remain green even when ripe. But to be on the safe side, and to see if they ever turn red, I will leave the others until the end of November or early December. This Baby Goldstar r...

Re: Need Advice - I'm Just Starting Out
I am more of a beginner than you, but you mention purple roses and I am over the moon with my purple floribunda Blue For You (Pejamblu). In the summer it produced many beautiful semi-double lilac-purple flowers, which hold themselves up well, no drooping, followed by beautiful large orange-red hips,...

Baby Goldstar seeds.
I just cut open one hip from my Baby Goldstar, a miniature rose. It was still green, but it has been on the bush for a few months, and all its hips are green whereas my other roses have hips that are turned red. It had one proper seed, a decent size, inside the quite small hip, and I planted it outs...

Re: Memory stress test
Epigenetics seems to be mostly accepted science now? I was wondering if you could produce an epigenetic blue rose by keeping it under different light conditions? Or maybe it is high levels of ultraviolet light that causes flowers to be blue, as many naturally blue flowers seem to grow at high altitu...

Re: Winter rooting of cuttings
I am trying to root some cuttings too, some I started several weeks ago and some I started only two weeks ago. I left the cuttings in plastic transparent bottles in water indoors on a window ledge, added a few drops of colloidal silver to the water, fingers crossed but this worked with some Rosa Chi...

Re: Current hips you are excited about?
My Blue for You has lots of bright red hips on it, I don't think quite ready for planting yet. I will definitely plant the seeds, although as they are open pollinated they are likely to be mostly self pollinated, though I have a lot of other kinds of roses growing nearby. At very least I could get s...

Sarah, women hybridizers sounds interesting. The only historical one I can think of is the Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. There must be a lots more though?

Re: Need advice on roses, what type, where to grow, where to buy and where to plant
This is just my opinion, and a thought. I grew some Rosa Chinenis Angel Wings from seed, and I really love them. They come in a lot of different petal counts and seem to be white, pale pink and magenta. They flower constantly, and are forming a lot of small rosehips which I hope the birds will enjoy...
