Re: Trivial Pursuit for Plant Breeders

... forgot after another trip to the "camera" Company", yes an optical sales entrepreneur, a NO 12 (good carving and pointing tool added for top end set completion), NO 10 and small NO 7 chestnut and garlic tool also added. There "gardening No 7" will be useful might even work for shucking oysters. ...

Re: Trivial Pursuit for Plant Breeders

Hi Don, The 08 Opinel pruning and grafting knife is RH, single bevel, single blade hook version (no multi-blade or duck bill in store's inventory). However I am left handed, but tend to cut away from me. Heel out-toes in, awkward for large hands but not a problem for mine. Economical price here~20$ ...

Re: Rebloom and the history of the rose

Txs Andre for info… it provides excellent experience info and encourages me to definitely pursue using the species. l had composed an interesting reply tome, but lately the board seems to set a time limit and l lose it when hit preview (asks to resign in). Thinks its because l changed to using a VPN.

Re: Rebloom and the history of the rose

Txs Kim for the experienced based info on an approach (m). I noticed you done a lot of work with this species, good to know (an incentive), someone has been successful with this hardy species. I will consider it a success to just get a cross to occur and tune in later seasons for other attributes, b...

Re: Rebloom and the history of the rose

“ R. fedtschenkoana are said to have RoKSN_A181” No gene history knowledge to contribute, but if has repeat potential thats a great synergy benefit for my efforts, because it shows extreme hardiness in my garden. Feels like another XYZ stan rose that meets my winter needs … but with repeat potential...

Re: Opinion Please on Proof of Germination Life

Have to agree, the early days are long gone for getting excited about commercial new introductions based on most meeting the shredder due to mother nature here. Back to the prairie pioneer F1+ x and xyz stan species roses. Hence the long climb up “ Annapurna “ … and singular focus of late that germi...

Re: Opinion Please on Proof of Germination Life

Sure is definitive evidence as one could hope for that some avenues maybe diminishing returns as likely “too” challenging or dead ends. Time might be better spent pursuing other breeding combos. Again an eye opener keeping it interesting. My hope is that since R. xanthina (normalis) was id by me for...

Re: Opinion Please on Proof of Germination Life

Txs Don for the experience and proof transfer - never even thought about the bottom end root start maybe being susceptible to a miscoding after seed triggered to start (roots mal germination). I would add this is the second time in a week l checked the stubborn seeds, and the ones that had this “bli...

Opinion Please on Proof of Germination Life

Bench Electronic equipment aided photo. I been engaging in overly retentive inspection of the no show seeds and minor variable adjustments over the last week trying to beat post boarding call post germination … a number of stubborn seeds have this dirty white appendage … this looks to me as a stubbo...

Re: Boston North Slump Over for Germination?

Good point about no above zero control case to compare against for absolute answer. Might try one next year. I keep reading rumours about the hardies may require longer cold conditioning - or moist conditioning. No problem got lots of species and my crosses buried outside in another test plot last f...

Re: Boston North Slump Over for Germination?

Stefan, Agree it worked very well for R. xanthina, a pleasant surprise. Seedlings robust and growing well. And pleased to germinate my first gallica try. Both doing well. Basically have as many germinations as taken cuttings for spring. And R. xanthina is hardy as spinossisimas here, and l am told e...

Re: Boston North Slump Over for Germination?

Western Conf =1 Merveille + 1 = 2

Over 10% germination … one goal met … one caveat … 83% one variety and 17% another so far out of 11 tried …. Though won't look a gift horse in the mouth

Seems from personal experience to documented history points to the path of least resistance is to use spinos as pollen parents… unless want to get up at 5 am to try dusting.

Re: Nice seedling with potential for winter hardiness

Agree nice looking rose, and real potential as garden winner. Grow both parents. And mother pedigree in my books excellent choice - makes a real tidy full bush and well behaved blooms and returns each spring with a little cleanup. I assume snow drift added the fullness.
