Seedling
Seedling
Any time I have a seedling that defies norms I get really skeptical that a stray pollen grain was responsible...I just wish I knew which pollen it was!
This is Highwire Flyer x 1113. 1113 usually produces compact, matte-blue foliage and single blossoms. This seedling ended up with glossy foliage and a vigorous, upright habit. The bud has strong yellow undertones and is firm, indicating a degree of doubleness.

Re: Seedling
Cool, Joe. I like the dark stems and leaves, and could certainly imagine that that plant has Radler genetics. (The toothed margins are a little too perfect, however!) I seem to recall you saying that 1113 was not very kind about permitting colors on offspring, so I understand your second-guessing. (Then again, roses seem to harbor a lot of surprises in their genome.) Regardless, whoever the daddy, that's a nice baby. I certainly don't have any plants that nice. Look forward to seeing the open bloom in a few days. Thanks.

Re: Seedling
I like it Joe. As for the possibility of "foreign" pollen, could the the color come "wayback" family members ?

Re: Seedling
Joe, your seedling seems very vigorous with its ramifications. It is already very nice, but in some years, it will have gorgeous look with this metallic foliage and its yellow red flowers. Congratulations!

Re: Seedling
I like the leaves and stems also and hope you will put up a picture when it fully opens. Nice one!

Re: Seedling
Rob, 1113 is a seedling of unknown parentage that has shown good health and a very nice rounded plant habit. See pic.
As I mentioned, I think the Highwire Flyer seedling might have been from stray pollen from maybe a yellow rose, because 1113 seedlings usually don't have such shiny foliage and are often single.

Re: Seedling
Beautiful, Joe. I love how the foliage sets off that bloom. ("Metallic" is actually a good description for the color and specularity of those leaves. Now I'm trying to think of a clever name that evokes fire and steel, or something similar...) I'd love to think it were a seedling of 1113 and would inherit the architecture.
I'm not familiar with HighWire Flyer, but I might have to look into it now...

Re: Seedling
Regarding Highwire Flyer, I want to note that the stunning rose on the cover page of the A.R.T.S. webpage (linked to in another post) is Highwire Flyer. I hope they can look half that good up here in Zone 3. I noticed another young seedling of the same cross that also has the metallic foliage.
In other seedlings, I kind of like the spoon-shaped petals of this seedling, which comes from All the Rage. What are my chances that future blossoms will be similar? Is it worth anything aesthetically?

I like it Joe. The color, the leaves and the petal shape is different in a good way.

I think you should name it "Groovy". It could take on a life of it's own.

Re: Seedling
Here is a new flower to open.
Blue for You x TUSPER (Tuscany Superb x Persian Yellow)
This is on a big shrub that wouldn't have been able to bloom outside so I brought it in for the winter in a pot.
Persian Yellow is somewhat doubtful as the true pollen parent of the pollen parent, since that seedling was way more disease resistant than either parent.
