Show-and-tell from last season?

Post: # 66485Post philip_la

It might be a little premature as some of you might be preoccupied still with harvesting and cleaning hips, but thought it would be fun to have a consolidated thread where folks could share their successes (and fantastic or interesting failures) and perhaps prompt some discussions on parents used and goals...

Fatherhood and other chaos has meant that I have *nothing* to show, personally, so this is also my self-indulgent way of vicariously enjoying the fruits of other folks' labors.

(My lack of experience / knowledge still doesn't put a damper on my having too many ideas and strong opinions, however.)

Nice seedlings Joe...Both Tuscany Superb and Belle Poitevine look exceptional and by their size are passing the test of time.

Thanks, Doug!

Your seedling of Julia Child x Tuscany Superb is gorgeous.

Note that my original plant of Tuscany Superb is quite pathetic and not able to build itself up at all due to winter dieback and disfiguring disease.

I have one rose that I do like a lot, here are 3 pictures from it during it's first year. Once it started blooming it didn't want to stop. LOL... I don't spray or pamper my roses. Exited to see how it will develop this year!

I'm not sure, with the holidays, that I saw all the follow-ups.
Joe, those are some *very* nice results. I envy you your land -- I hadn't seen the video before now -- but I do have to ask about the dearth of weeds. Lots of pre-emergents?

Glad to see that Lemon Fizz has worked so well for you. I'm surprised that she passed on color with a few of those crosses (Darlow's Enigma?), and really like the music box seedling as well. (Yeah, I like the garish ones.)

And Doug, I like the old-fashioned look of your seedling as well, and really enjoy seeing everyone else's as well. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the feedback, Philip! It was fun to see this thread again. The rose breeder in me can't wait 'til spring. The nursery owner in me is just fine with several more months of winter. We use essentially no pre-emergents, but I am super lucky to have good people especially my father who does all the cultivating.

I have a hunch that several of us are in between crossing and harvesting, so thought I'd solicit photos of this seasons seedlings.

I don't know patent rules, and while I'm of the mind that 1) most of us won't have the ability to objectively evaluate seedlings until we have a few thousand under our belt, and 2) most people who have grown thousands of seedling are probably familiar with the patent laws, and 3) typically only about 1/10,000 seedlings merit introduction, it might nonetheless be good for someone to post patent regulations again prior to folks sharing any of their nicer accomplishments.

Thanks in advance. Always fun to vicariously enjoy other folks' acheivements!

Hi Philip,

To me it seems unlikely that the patent office is going to scour the historic internet for a rose that looks like the one for which a patent is being applied...so I'm more inclined to relax a little about sharing seedling pics on here, as long as they are not given a name. If you post a pic saying, "this is my new rose 'Kitty Litter', ie. BERGmeowpoo" and then later apply for a patent using those names, well then hey. But a simple pic on a rose breeding forum? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...my opinion is not based on research.

I'm desperate to give a tour of my roses...I drive around and look at them every day with nobody to blab to. It's a universal rule of life that everyone likes to show people their garden. With plant breeders it's much more satisfying to show your plants to other breeders who understand the process.

I haven't been taking many pictures. I did record a long, rambling, video tour the other day but I should probably re-do it sober.

Joe

You probably should, Joe... And yet, somehow, I'm kinda hoping you don't.
It would be a shame to lose the potential entertainment value, even if it were to make it more elucidating.

Agreed. (hint, hint...) ;-)

Poppyb, I failed to acknowledge your work. Very nice -- Thanks for sharing. The second yellow reminds me of Kordes' Sunny Sky (which, btw, I highly recommend for anyone looking for a healthy yellow tea -- very resistant, if not overly saturated in color.)
