Re: HMF

It is not only in the far past that at least one hybridizer "fudged" the parentage (unless you feel that because of my age, I am part of the "far past"). I was seated at a National ARS banquet with a "famous" hybridizer who had had too much to drink. When I said something about the difficulty of the...

jbergeson, regarding Folksinger. The only Folksinger offspring I have listed in Help-Me-Find is Orange Alzbeta Kuska. I was surprised to find that Help-Me-Find has only one other listed offspring. I recommend it highly.

Dave I tried my wife's computer and you are correct. I thought there was something I had to set to make it available to the general public, but I did not see anything. I will have to go back and look some more.

I have set up a link to pictures of the flowers of a few of the roses that made the final cut. https://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/RosesFromFinalCutOf612012# Please understand that some/many were not retained because of the beautiful flower but because of the genes that could contribute to further ...

Re: Names of crosses that made the cut from 1000 to 61

Thanks Don for the kind comments and the parent breakdown. There are other interesting lessons that I learned. For example some parents seem to mostly give offspring similar to themselves. Dortmund is one that seemed to do that. I was surprised to see that John Davis gave me very diversified offspri...

Re: Names of crosses that made the cut from 1000 to 61

Regarding open pollinated seeds. Since I do not spray, I have lots of bees. I am willing for Nature to assist me in obtaining seedlings. My contribution is then to decide whether or not the seedling is worth keeping. I have seen article(s?) that some/many famous hybridizers used all/mainly open poll...

Re: Illusion goes away....

I have a spray free garden and essentially the good "things" keep the bad "things" at bay. I.E. I do not record disease resistance as I do not have to. The following may be useful in putting the concept of biocontrol into layman terms: "Disease-suppressive soil microorganisms have been found in many...

Re: Looking for hips from any of these

Hansa as mother problem, "Interesting you bring this up, since I'm having trouble in the last couple of years to get 'Hansa' hips to mature to a size where the seeds are viable. Also, I note the ends of the branches having hips sometimes die back and this, of course, negatively affects the maturing ...

Re: Looking for hips from any of these

Title: Rosa Nitida as a Parent, by PERCY H. WRIGHT, Moose Range, Saskatchewan, Canada, published in American Rose Magazine, July-August, pages 15-16, 1948. In 1938 I began using pollen of Rosa nitida on various mother plants in an effort to secure new types of hardy roses. Among the mother plants us...

Re: Looking for hips from any of these

"Regarding Hansa and Percy Wright, I did a Google desktop search of my computer and found a Percy Wright article in which he states: "The female parent of my crosses was the Rugosa variety Hansa. This is probably not a hybrid at all, as reported, but a pure strain of Rugosa, related to Rugosa as the...

Re: Illusion goes away....

I used Illusion extensively in my hybridizing. As I mentioned in another thread I cut my garden back from about 1000 roses to about 50. Which of the "top 50" have Illusion genes? Illusion X (Rugelda X Peter Harris's R-15) (Folksinger X Illusion ) X (Folksinger X (William Baffin X OP)) (I llusion X J...

Re: Looking for hips from any of these

I retired from the University with a 36 year Ohio pension (within 8 dollars a month of my final take home pay) in 1993. (Retirement from a University still allows one to do research.) This is the final retirement from our large property to a low maintance something. I cut the roses from 2000 to abou...

Re: Looking for hips from any of these

I used Hansa a lot. I think Percy Wright commented on its use (I have gotten rid of all my literature - final retirement move). Maybe Paul Olsen has the article. http://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/HenrySRoses#5068777882172477282 http://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/HenrySRoses#5070062940682408610htt...

Re: Controlling weeds in large fields among roses.

mike athy, I have my lawn service apply corn gluten meal in the spring with a broadcast spreader to stop the germination of weed seeds. The label states to use 10 pounds per 1000 square feet. I see recomendations for fall application also, but I skip that. Maybe in milder climates that is useful. In...

Re: YouTube as an RHA Resource - We are looking for a YouTub

Just a historical comment. In the "early days" Virgil Mitchel started a VHS video which was sent from hybridizer to hybridizer (honor system). It was my impression that it was popular as a video can demonstrate certain techniques better than words and/or still pictures.

Re: Controlling weeds in large fields among roses.

I use and recommend cornmeal for weeds in general, but I have not tried it in my seedling beds as I do not know how it would affect the root growth of my seedlings.
