Re: Canina Chromosome pairing

"we may ask why Synstyles have not (apparently) participated in the formation of polyploid species."

A very good question, in the last couple of years I have been using roses from Synstylae or its offspring. Even at the level of F3 you can still see some influence of Synstylae stigma's.

Canina Chromosome pairing

A quick question.

With R. canina varietites and their weird and wonderful chromosome configuration, do the bivalents only have the influence of the plant growth and characteristics or do the univalents have some say in the matter as well.

Cheers Warren

This should be interesting Hybrid kordesii, R.virginiana, Rugosa and Hybrid multiflora combination.

Re: early culling of species seedlings...

that is the reason I mainly use species as pollinators, they and rugosa's shed their pollen at a very early stage in bloom formation.

Re: Strong Characteristics which are passed down the line

Don I don't mind thorns, but I am working on some thornless lines. I did this cross http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.64468 which ended up thornless, a lot of Noisettes are thornless and have good results.

Re: Strong Characteristics which are passed down the line

almost all seedlings bred from this line descending from "Maigold" produce these thorns along with that linseed oil fragrance. Xanthus was the only one to have sweet fruity perfume, mind you the thorns were well represented.

Strong Characteristics which are passed down the line

I have found by using certain cultivars or species , certain characteristics can be strongly represented. This is seedling S37 T64 which is 4 generations away from R.spinosissima. As you can see the thorns have prevailed.

Re: R. davidii

Hi Phil, R.davidii is very good, Those pics which you saw were from the (Wendy X Altissimo) X R.davidii, the vigour was exceptional growing 9 ft in one year from germination, Health is also very good. When I crossed R.davidii with Sympathie (Hybrid kordesii background) it didn#t do much growing unti...

Phil the vinegar is acid , peroxide is base, they probably counteracted each other, therefore nothing was achieved.

Re: 2018 Germinations

Hi Joe;
I will let you know about TB, I think TB X KO will produce something healthy and hardy, the blooms will probably be semi double, and hoping some scent from TB may be passed on

Re: 2018 Germinations

The seedlings from the cross U22 V106 ( Hybrid virginana X Hulthemia persica) are looking good. The seedling is showing the foliage colour of the pollinator which is grey green. There is also a photo showing the foliage colour and shape of the seed parent (Sympathie X R.virginiana).
