I wouldn't sweat the size of the boom, Joe. In fact, I would be surprised if it *could* be made much larger. Others with more knowledge will hopefully set my assumptions straight, but I don't know of any e.g. fimbriated rose blossoms that achieve the otherwise expected size. Serratipetala and Grootendorst, for instance, are both generally not more than about 2 inches across, despite being a sport of Cramoisi, and a rugosa, respectively. (Cramoisi's blooms are typically close to 25% larger than it's fimbriated sport, as I recall.)
My assumption is that the mutation stunts the petal growth. But it's still a really cool novelty.
